Race report by Andrew Laidler

Another race weekend, and another group of Jarrow and Hebburn AC runners turned out for the Wild Deer event on the trails surrounding Beamish Hall. A very well organised and socially distanced event, with runners starting in small waves of 6 at regular intervals. The tea/coffee/bacon sarnies waiting at the finish line was a nice touch.

The course was as challenging as we expected with a lot of climbing, about as much mud and probably more swearing as runners made their way around the route.

In the Women’s race we had Jenna Killock coming home first for the club in a time of 50:08 (6th lady & 4th in age cat); she was closely followed by a hobbling Rachel Breheny in 51:00 (7th lady & 2nd in age cat) continuing her great start to her Jarrow/Hebburn career. Helen Johnson finished shortly after in 57:08, making her 17th lady and 6th in her age category.

On the Men’s side, we had Andrew Laidler narrowly missing out on a podium finish coming home in 4th overall with a time of 41:47. There was great rivalry between Paddy McShane and Darren Parks, both vying to get back for the post race beers as quickly as possible. Paddy edged it by just 32 seconds (46:50 to 47:22) with both coming in the top 20 overall and securing 3rd and 4th in their age category. Paul Emmerson was just a couple of seconds back in 47:24.

Next up, we had Garry Brooks opting to brave the very slippy course in pristine road shoes (49:14) and Andrew Thornton who more wisely decided to borrow a pair of trail shoes (51:03). Richard Scott came through in 55:37 to round out the men’s results.

Overall a great race at a fantastic location where I’m sure many of our runners will return for another crack at this course. I know Paddy in particular said he couldn’t wait and would first on the sign up sheet…

Looking ahead

Look out for our runners at upcoming fixtures, with several registered for races at both Bamburgh (1st Nov) and Slaley Hall (15th Nov) in the coming weeks; ahead of a massive turnout at a sellout Croft Circuit 5k on 28th November.
